The Education Committee is delighted to announce the donation of 10 new Dell Laptop computers to our Beca Scholarship students. When student volunteers and their chaperones from Education = Hope headquarters in South Carolina visited us recently in San Ramón, each of them carried one of the computers in their backpacks. Now these computers are almost ready for distribution to 10 fortunate Beca students thanks to Noelia, our intern, and Alisson, her mentor and our former intern, who spent many hours deciding who among our students had the necessary Wifi and motivation to learn this new-to-them form of technology.

Most of these students have never used a computer (except maybe occasionally in their high school) so to aid them in learning this new tool, UCR’s Technology Department is donating various staff who will spend five Saturday mornings teaching these students basic computing skills. Johanna Fernandez was instrumental in finding a very competent computer technician who spent many hours reconfiguring the computers into the Spanish language and Terry Handler and Scott McAnally donated their time making sure that the computers would contain the necessary apps, folders, images, settings, etc. that the students would need to be successful. It was definitely a group effort on the part of the Education Committee and these students will benefit immensely from this effort. Thanks to everyone for all the help!
